US To Launch New Programs To Assist Romani Communities
4/8/2011 4:49 AM
(RTTNews) -
The United States will be launching two new programs to assist members of the Romani communities in Romania, Moldova, Slovakia and Hungary. This is in addition to the U.S. government's ongoing support in Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, Kosovo and elsewhere across Europe.
This was announced by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in a message marking the International Roma Day celebrations on April 8.
Conveying the Obama administration's greetings to Romani people across Europe and around the world, Clinton said it is also an occasion to commemorate the history of brave resistance against Nazi persecution.
Clinton vowed that she was committed to protecting and promoting the rights of Romani people, as they continue to experience racial profiling, violence, segregation and other forms of discrimination in many places.
She called upon European leaders to redouble their efforts to ensure that Romani people are not discriminated against in access to education, healthcare, housing and employment opportunities.
Washington is working to increase legal assistance, expand educational opportunities, and help more Romani people participate in political discourse to strengthen a new generation of Romani community leaders, she added.
