Romania: Roma anger over switch to 'Gypsy'
Date: 03 February 2011
Two parliamentary committees in Romania have voted to change the official name of the minority ethnic group from Roma to Gypsy, saying the latter is a more widely used name for them and that the former is too close to the name Romania.
But the votes have angered Roma civic groups, who say the word Gypsy has long carried negative connotations, such as being poor, uneducated and rootless

People have a right to the self determination on what they shall be called. It is not up to Romanians to decide how the Romani people will be known. Just another indignity against the Romani people.
