People have asked if we would do a post on My BFAGW.
I couldn't write that title when it was filmed and broadcast in England, and I'm having an even harder time now.
It continues to amaze me the things that people will endorse in the name of "entertainment", even when it exploits a whole ethnic group of historically, and presently oppressed people.
Just read some of the posts on this blog.
Do I really have to address the racism here?
I hope you all realize that this show is NOT representative of the Romani culture, nor of the Romani in America. I can expand but I just don't have the heart.
I recently heard a report on NPR about the commercials for diet and weight loss clinics.
You know all those
BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS.
I certainly always noticed the difference in makeup, demeanor....but I just learned that the businesses hire SKINNY PEOPLE AND PAY THEM TO GAIN WEIGHT. Then they reverse the BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS.
See any connection here. I'm just asking.
Please, at the very least, DO NOT WATCH THIS EXPLOITATIVE RACIST SHOW.
Better yet, please protest it.

I agree Morgan! I am 26 years old and just found out that I am Romani. My grandparents kept it a secret to shield my father, but deep down I always knew the way I was raised was so different then my friends. I found your story at wwww.WSHERC.org and I was intrigued by it. I am living in Houston and recently went to the Holocaust museum. I have been there several times before, but this trip was different then all the rest. I count 4-7 sentences in the entire museum about the Roma/Sinti people in the Holocaust. It hurt me worse than anything I have ever felt before. One day I hope to learn much about my lost heritage. Thank you so much for sharing your story.

Scarlett,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this supportive and heartfelt message.
You are so right about the pain of visiting the Holocaust museum.
Our exclusion from the exhibits and written materials is so totally insulting and ignorant.
We used to have one Romani representative on the board, but that person has never been replaced. And the beat goes on....
The Holocaust Center in Seattle (WSHERC) has been very supportive and inclusive. They sponsor my presentations and often follow this blog. Some things they post on their site.
So many of us have been deprived of our culture and heritage.
Through overt methods, like my story, or more insidious, subtle ways like constant racism and having to hide our identites. Many parents did this to protect their children.

Morgan,
ReplyDeleteI work at a museum a few blocks away from the Holocaust Museum in Houston and I have been debating whether or not to ask them about their lack of information on the Roma people in the museum. I am just not sure what to say. :)
Scarlett,
ReplyDeleteOh what a wonderful opportunity.
We could send you lots of information and book/movie titles which you could give them in the spirit of education.
We could also connect them with the WSHERC.
Why don't you email me directly

Thank you very much for your support.
ps Have you heard of Dina Babbit, a Jewish survivor of Auschwitz and a wonderful friend of the Romani.
